Every one of us has had colds at some point in our life. It is one of the most common ailments that afflict humans. It is an infection of the upper respiratory tract caused by various possible viruses, the most common of which is rhinovirus. When you have a cold, probably the first thing you would do is head for the drugstore or the medicine cabinet and choose from the various pharmaceutical cold medications available. But do you know that there are many natural remedies for colds that can help speed up your recovery and also help make you feel better?
Having a runny nose, coughing and sneezing, the symptoms of the common cold are actually the body’s way to “clean house”. There is no cure for the common cold and pharmaceutical medications only suppress the symptoms rather than curing them. The best way to treat colds is to help your body get rid of the cold. At the first sign of cold, you should deal with is as soon as possible. Drinking lots of water is an effective way to fight off colds. Make sure that you sip your water throughout the day instead of taking it all at once. This ensures that your body absorbs the water more efficiently.
There’s also a plethora of food that are beneficial in treating the symptoms of colds. For instance, Vitamin C is a known remedy for colds and is readily available from fruits such as oranges, lemons, apples and many more. Lemon is a great detoxifier and can also help break up the mucous. Herbs such as rosehip, lemongrass, bayberry, cloves, ginger and horseradish are great decongestants or expectorants. Activated charcoal is also an effective detoxifier that helps clean up the system. However, if symptoms still worsen, it is best to consult your doctor for a check up.
